Why Grip Strength Matters More Than You Think
You're halfway through a heavy deadlift. Your legs and back still feel strong, but your hands begin to lose their hold on the bar.
Or perhaps you're midway through the Farmers Carry in a HYROX race. Your engine is still running, but your forearms are burning long before your legs are ready to stop.
It's a common experience across strength training, endurance sports and functional fitness. Often, it's not your lungs or your largest muscles that become the limiting factor—it's your grip.
Grip strength is your ability to generate and maintain force through your hands and forearms while holding or controlling an external load. Whether you're lifting a barbell, carrying kettlebells, climbing, or holding a yoga pose, it forms the connection between your body and the movement you're trying to perform.
A stronger grip won't instantly make you faster or stronger. But it allows you to express the strength and endurance you already have, without your hands becoming the weakest link.
Grip Strength Across Different Training Styles
Grip strength plays a role in almost every type of training, even if it's rarely programmed directly.
Strength Training
Deadlifts, rows, pull-ups and heavy carries all depend on your ability to hold onto the load. As your grip fatigues, the quality of your lifts often declines—even if your larger muscle groups still have more to give.
This is why many experienced lifters include carries, hangs or dedicated grip work alongside their regular training.
HYROX
Grip has become increasingly important with the rise of HYROX, where several stations place sustained demands on the hands and forearms.
The Farmers Carry is the most obvious example, but it's not the only one. The Sled Pull requires athletes to maintain a secure grip while generating force through the entire body, while Sandbag Lunges demand stability as fatigue accumulates over repeated reps.
None of these stations are especially grip-intensive in isolation. Together, they create cumulative fatigue, making grip endurance an important performance advantage.
Running & Trail Running
Grip may not seem essential for runners, but it becomes increasingly relevant over longer distances and technical terrain.
Carrying hydration flasks, nutrition, trekking poles or mandatory gear all require sustained grip endurance. Maintaining a relaxed but secure hold also improves efficiency and reduces unnecessary tension through the upper body.
Yoga & Functional Fitness
From kettlebell flows and rope climbs to Plank, Crow Pose and Downward Dog, grip contributes to stability and control. Developing stronger hands and forearms improves your ability to maintain position under load while reducing fatigue during longer sessions.
Grip Strength and Longevity: What the Research Says
Grip strength isn't just a performance metric—it's also one of the most researched measures of overall physical function.
One of the largest studies on the subject, the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE) Study, followed more than 140,000 adults across 17 countries. Researchers found that lower grip strength was independently associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, disability and all-cause mortality.
Grip strength isn't causing these outcomes. Instead, researchers view it as a practical indicator of overall muscular function and physical capability.
Subsequent studies have reached similar conclusions, linking higher grip strength with healthier ageing, better mobility and reduced frailty in older adults.
For athletes, the takeaway isn't that stronger hands automatically lead to a longer life. Rather, maintaining muscular strength—including grip strength—appears to be an important part of preserving physical function over time.
How to Improve Grip Strength
The good news is that grip strength responds well to consistent training. You don't need an elaborate routine—many of the best grip exercises are already part of a well-rounded strength programme.
Farmer's Carries
One of the most effective exercises for building grip endurance. Carrying heavy loads challenges the hands, forearms and core while closely mimicking real-world movement.
Dead Hangs
Simply hanging from a pull-up bar develops support grip while also improving shoulder endurance and upper-body control.
Pull-ups and Heavy Rows
Pulling movements naturally strengthen the muscles involved in gripping. Rather than relying on lifting straps for every set, allow your grip to do some of the work whenever possible.
Suitcase Carries
Holding a heavy weight in one hand challenges grip while also training core stability and balance.
Plate Pinches
Pinching two weight plates together between your thumb and fingers develops hand strength that's difficult to build through barbells and dumbbells alone.
Like any other physical quality, grip improves through progressive overload. Gradually increasing the weight, duration or complexity of these exercises is far more effective than occasional high-intensity efforts.
A Simple Way to Test Your Grip Strength
Sports scientists typically measure grip strength using a hand dynamometer, a device commonly used in both research and clinical settings.
While most people won't have access to one, there's a practical alternative.
Try a dead hang.
Hang from a pull-up bar with an overhand grip and time how long you can maintain good control.
Although body weight and training experience influence performance, these benchmarks provide a useful reference:

Like any fitness metric, it's most valuable when tracked over time rather than compared with someone else's results.
Should You Always Use Lifting Straps?
Lifting straps can be useful when your goal is to maximise training volume for larger muscle groups, particularly during heavy pulling movements.
However, relying on straps for every workout may reduce the opportunity to develop your grip naturally.
A simple approach is to complete your working sets without straps whenever practical, introducing them only when grip becomes the limiting factor rather than the focus of the session.
The Takeaway
Grip strength rarely receives the same attention as strength, endurance or mobility, yet it quietly supports all three.
Whether you're training for your first HYROX race, building strength in the gym, exploring technical trails or simply aiming to stay active for decades to come, stronger grip allows you to perform movements with greater confidence and control.
It may not be the most visible measure of fitness, but it's one of the most useful.
